H. Grady Chadwick, 61, former county official, dropped dead Thursday about 10:30 a.m. in the lobby of the Claypool Hotel at Indianapolis. Mr. Chadwick, a member of Crawfordsville High School's first state championship basketball team in 1911, had gone to Indianapolis with friends to attend some of the sessions of the county official associations which are meeting at the capital city. With him when he died were John W. Ward, county school superintendent, and Earl Bonwell, county commissioner.

Death was attributed to heart disease, which had troubled him previously. For many years Mr. Chadwick had been active in Republican party politics in the county. He was elected to two four-year terms as trustee of Coal Creek township. Later he was elected to two two-year terms as county treasurer, serving from Jan. 1, 1939, to Jan. 1, 1943. He was elected county auditor in the 1942 election, taking office on Jan. 1, 1944. He was re-elected county auditor in the 1946 election and completed his eight years in the office only last Jan. 1.

For many years, Mr. Chadwick had owned and operated a farm in Coal Creek Township. However, he moved to Crawfordsville in 1942 and had lived recently at 106 E. College St., although still retaining ownership of his farm. Born May 3, 1891, Mr. Chadwick was the son of Eli and Mary Brochese Chadwick, who lived in the Mace community. He attended Crawfordsville High School and was graduated in 1911. He played a guard position on the Athenian basketball team which won the initial IHSAA tournament in 1911, and always retained an active interest in the school's athletic events. On Dec. 24, 1912, he was married to Miss Stella Wilson, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. James E. Wilson. Mr. Chadwick was a member of the Methodist Church at New Richmond. He was a member of the Farm Bureau and had been active for many years in the affairs of the Montgomery County Sales Pavilion.

Mr. Chadwick had an extremely wide acquaintance, particularly in the rural areas. Over the years, he had clerked at hundreds of farm sales. The survivors include the wife; a daughter, Mrs. A. K. Bush of Rossville, Ill., and two sons, S/Sgt. Dan Chadwick, stationed with the U. S. Air Force at Dayton, O., and Maj. Ralph Chadwick, stationed with the Army at Trieste, Italy. The latter is a veterinarian. Both stayed in the service after entering the armed forces during World War II. Other survivors include two sisters, Mrs. O. W. Parker of this city and Mrs. George Hartung, who lived east of here, and two brothers, Harry Chadwick of near here, and Archie B. Chadwick of Chicago. Several nieces and nephews also survive. Three brothers and two sisters preceded him in death. They were Lee Chadwick, Clint Chadwick, J. Frank Chadwick, Mrs. Dicy Hinkle and Mrs. Rose Reno. The body was brought to the Hunt & Son Funeral Home here but funeral arrangements are being held up pending work from the son in Italy. Crawfordsville Journal Review - 17 December 1952 p 4:4 Funeral services for H. Grady Chadwick will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the First Methodist Church. Mr. Chadwick, former county auditor and treasurer, died suddenly Thursday morning in the lobby of the Claypool Hotel at Indianapolis. Friends may pay their respects at the Chadwick residence, 106 E. College St., after Sunday noon. Burial will be in the Oak Hill Cemetery. Rev. H. Earle Moore, of Dayton, Ind., former pastor of the Trinity Methodist Church here, will be in charge of the services.
