-- The body of Pvt. Howard Franklin Cedars, 1st Montgomery County casuality of the Korean War will arrive in Crawfordsville Wednesday afternoon over the Big Four division of the NY Central lines. The body will be taken to the Proffitt & Sons Funeral Home where friends may pay their respects. Funeral services will be held at the funeral home at 2 o'clock Friday afternoon with Byron Cox Post of the American Legion to conduct military rites at the graveside in Waynetown Masonic Cemetery. Rev. Guy E. Tremaine will be the officiating minister. The son of Oscar Cedars, RFD 4 Crawfordsville Pvt Cedars who was 18 years old was killed in action July 16, 1950 in the Kum River offensive. He was in service with the 19th Inf of the 24th Div. He was sent overseas after basic training at Ft. Knox, KY. He enlisted Feb 1948 at the age of 16. A native of Montgomery County, Pvt. Cedars attended Mt. Zion school. Surviving besides the father are two brothers, Ivan Lee Cedars of this city and Clarence William Cedars of Edgerton, Wis; a sister, Mrs. Harry Earle, RFD 4, Crawfordsville; two nieces, a nephew, several uncles and aunts and grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Emmet Gillem of Kokomo. The mother, Mrs. Lola Cedars and a sister, Dororthy Ellen Cedars preceded him in death. -- kbz

Pvt. Howard Franklin Cedars, 18, son of Oscar Cedars, RFD 4, Crawfordsville has been missing in action in Korea since July 16, according to a telegram received Wednesday by the father from the Department of Defense. The message was signed by Gen. Edward F. Witsell. In service the past two and one half years, Pvt. Cedars who enlisted at age 16 was sent overseas in June 1949. Until a few weeks ago he had been on duty with the 19th Infantry in Japan. He took his basic training at Fort Knox, Ky. Pvt. Cedars was born Sept 12, 1931 in Crawfordville. He attended the Mt. Zion School, northwest of Crawfordsville. The father makes his home with Mr. and Mrs. Harry Earle, RFD 4, Crawfordsville. Mrs.. Earle is a sister of Pvt. Cedars. There are two other brothers, Iva Cedars, 614 South Washington St and Billy Cedars of Edgerton, Wis. Pvt. Cedars enlistment was to have been completed last month. In a letter to his brother, Ivan received here early in July, the missing soldier said he expected to sail for home July 17. Pvt. Cedars is the third Crawfordsville man to be reported Missing in Action in Korea. Those previously listed as MIA were Lt. Raymond E. Pearson, RFD 2 and Pfc. Charles Northcutt son of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Northcutt, 911 Tuttle Avenue. - kbz
