Joseph A. Carroll, 83, of 2741
N. Salisbury St., West Lafayette died at 6:30 a.m. Monday, Jan. 17, 1994, in
Westminster Village Health Care Center. Born Nov. 14, 1910, in Mount Vernon, he
grew up on a farm in Posey County. He graduated from Mount Vernon High School
in 1930 and received his bachelor's and master's degrees from Purdue
University. Mr. Carroll taught vocational agriculture and science at Tangier
High School from 1934 to 1936. He was a graduate assistant in the Agricultural
Economics Department at Purdue from 19365 to 1937 and then taught at Chalmers
High School from 1937 to 1944. He was assistant county agent in Benton County
in 1944 to 1945, and was County Agriculture Extension Agent in Jasper County
from 1945 to 1959 and in Montgomery County from 1959 to 1974. He was a member
of Wabash Avenue Presbyterian Church in Crawfordsville, Lafayette Rotary Club
and Purdue Alumni Association. He was a former president of Rensselaer Rotary
Club and Indiana County Extension Agents Association; was former chairman of
Montgomery County Red Cross Board of Directors; and former secretary of
Crawfordsville Rotary Club. His marriage was to Frances Louise Woody on Oct.
27, 1934, in Darlington. She preceded him in death. Surviving are a brother,
Merle Carroll of Corona, Calif.; and two sisters, Esther Millspaugh of Buena
Park, Calif. and Emily Cross of Mount Vernon. A daughter, son-in-law and
grandson, Barbara, Phil and David Lee Jarrett, died in an auto accident July 6,
1963. Visitation was at Hunt & Son Funeral Home, Crawfordsville, 2 hours
prior to 2 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 20, 1994 service there. The Rev. Wallace
McDonald officiated. Interment in Greenlawn Cemetery, Darlington. – jlr
