A 31-year-old father of four became Montgomery County’s first traffic fatality of 1965 when Richard Carrell, Rt. 1, Darlington, was killed about ……..:30 a.m. Sunday in a one-car crash 3 miles northeast of Crawfordsville on Ind. 47. The sheriff’s department said the accident occurred when Elbert Lawrence Tipton, 25, New Ross, driver of the car in which Carrell was riding, lost control of the vehicle at high speed as he was headed toward the city. Tipton was in serious condition in Culver Hospital Sunday night with a neck fracture and other injuries. Officers said the 1960 Buick four-door sedan spun around before leaving the highway. It went off on the driver’s right side and began overturning. The car overturned at least three times, including once end over end — at which time officers believe Carrell was thrown out, and came to a stop, completely wrecked, a measured 548 feet from the point at which officers first discerned any skid marks. Carrell’s body was found 63 feet beyond the point at which the smashed auto came to a stop. Dr. Samuel Millis, county coroner, said he died of multiple injuries, including basal skull fracture, cervical spine fracture and crushed chest. Whether Tipton was thrown from the car could not be ascertained, officers said. The driver himself did not know, Sheriff Clarence Demoret reported, but the sheriff added that it did not appear he could have remained in the vehicle until it finally stopped. The sheriff’s department was called at 4:55 a.m. from the Fred Edwards residence, nearest home to the scene of the accident. Officers said Tipton had wandered in a daze to several homes in the neighborhood. He was brought in a sheriff’s car to the hospital. A physician said Tipton had a broken neck, chest injuries and lacerations. There were no known witnesses to the early morning crash, according to the sheriff’s department. The sheriff said Sunday night that the investigation was continuing. The accident victim was born in Crawfordsville July 19, 1933 to Leslie and Ida Tate Carrell. He was a graduate of Alamo High School. He was married in Crawfordsville Feb. 14, 1959 to Nettie Denney Williams. They lived in Ladoga before moving two years ago to Rt. 1 Darlington. He was employed in the bindery department at R. R. Donnelley & Sons Co. Inc. here. He was a Korean War veteran and a member of the Eagles Lodge. Surviving are the parents, of Rt. 3 Crawfordsville; the wife; two daughters, Doris Ann and Barbara Jean; a son, Richard Jr., and a stepdaughter, Connie Sue Williams; three brothers, Donald of Wingate, Warren of Browns Valley and Robert of Park Ridge, Ill.; a sister, Mrs. Harold Davis of Rt. 2 Ladoga, and 17 nieces and nephews, four uncles and nine aunts. Funeral services are set for 2 p.m. Tuesday at Bright Funeral Home in Crawfordsville, with interment in Oak Hill Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home after 7 p.m. Monday. – jlr
