James Kenneth "Kenny" Cave, 68, retired city police officer and turnkey at the county jail for the past nine years, died at 12:15 a.m. today in Culver Hospital. he had been a patient there since he was stricken ill last Wednesday while on duty at the jail. Cave retired from the police department with the rank of sergeant in April, 1962, after 21 years of service. He began his police career as a patrolman May 1, 1935, doing merchant police duty. During his career, Cave served under six different mayors and nine police chiefs and at one time held the rank of captain. the department grew from nine officers when he joined the force to 23 men at his retirement. He was called to military service in July of 1942 and saw duty with the military police. He returned to the local department Feb. 1, 1948. On his retirement from the police department, Cave formed the Crawfordsville Merchant Police Protective Agency, a private enterprise. The agency assumed the duties of merchant policemen. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church; Montgomery Lodge 50, F&AM; Byron Cox Post 72 of the American Legion, and Fraternal Order of Police. Born March 5, 1904, in Crawfordsville, he was the son of Ulysses Grant and Mary Virginia Sayers Cave. He attended Crawfordsville schools. Surviving are a brother, Robert W. Cave of Crawfordsville, and a niece, Mrs. Daniel Mahan of Cincinnati. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Mary C. Rich and Helen Sayers Cave. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday in Burkhart Funeral Home here with Rev. Frank L. Little officiating. Burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home after 2 p.m. Thursday. Masonic services will be conducted in the funeral home at 8 p.m. Thursday.
