Mrs. Mattie E. Carver, 88, oldest member of the First Baptist Church, died at 8:05 p.m. Monday at her home, 1510 E. Main St. She had lived with her son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Dwight Williams, since September, 1953 and had been ill the last five years. Born in Alamo April 4, 1872, she was a daughter of Thomas and Cynthia Denman VanCleave. She married Greanberry Carver May 12, 1898, in Crawfordsville, where they began housekeeping. Later they moved to a farm three miles east of the city on the Indianapolis Road. She attended Herron School. Prior to her marriage she and her family operated a toll gate at the end of South Grant Avenue. Mrs. Carver was a member of the King’s Daughters Class and Missionary Circle of the church here. Survivors include the daughter, Mrs. Williams; a son, Paul D. Carver of Mace, a high school teacher at Noblesville; a granddaughter, Charlotte Jean Carver of Mace; a grandson, David Carver of San Jose State College in California; a brother, Harry VanCleave of Crawfordsville, and nieces and nephews. Services are announced for 2 p.m. Thursday at the Bright Funeral Home with interment in Oak Hill Cemetery. Rev. Esmond Elliott of Indianapolis and Rev. Carlton G. Christenson will officiate. Friends may call after noon Wednesday at the funeral home. – jlr
