The death of John C. Canine, which had been hourly expected for several days, occurred on Friday night. He had been ill for a number of months. An operation was performed a few days ago but it was impossible to give him any relief. Funeral serivces were held at the home in Crawfordsville on Sunday morning. A service was also held at Union church by Rev. Cornelius Airhart, after which the body was interred at Maple Ridge. Mr. Canine was born in this township on the farm lately owned by A.C. Evans north of town, October 4, 1850. He was the son of William and Martha Canine. When he grew up he engaged in farming, later moving to Waveland where he carried on a livery business. In his later years he has been an extensive buyer of horses and mules. In 1872 he married Mary Elizabeth Burford. To them were born 5 children: TS Canine and Mrs. Rose Livengood of Crawfordsville; Harry Canine of Danville; Mrs. Sallye Sheffield of Frankfort, Ky; and Ben H. Canine of Russellville. Mrs. Canine passed away several years ago. Later, Mr. Canine married Miss Janie Clore who survives him. There is also one brother, Thomas Canine of Oxford who was present at the funeral and Mrs. John Gobin of Paris, Ill. Mr. Canine was a member of the Union congregation of Primitive Baptists. He was a man of kindly disposition and well liked by a wide circle of friends and acquaintances. - kbz

John C. Canine, Big Horse Buyer Died Last Night
John C. Canine died at 7:45 o'clock Friday night at his home 208 W. College Street after an illness of several months from a complication of diseases. An operation at Culver Union Hospital a few days ago failed to give him relief. Mr. Canine who was one of the best known men in Montgomery County was born near Waveland, October 4, 1850, and his early boyhood was spent as a farmer. He removed to Waveland where he continued to reside until 8 years ago when he moved to Crawfordsville to make his home. Mr. Canine during almost his entire life has been engaged in the horse and mule buying business which has given him a wide acquaintance over several counties. He is survived by his wife and five children: TS Canine and Mrs. FE Livengood of this city; HR Canine, Danville, Ill; Mrs. MW Sheffield of Frankfort Ky and BH Canine of Russellville and one brother TJ Canine. - kbz
