William R. Canine died at his home near Freedom Church on Wednesday morning after being sick about a week with pneumonia. He enjoyed remarkably good health until about two years ago since which time it has been failing. Funeral services were conducted at old Union Saturday monring by Elder J.H. Olphant, who had long been an intimate friend of the deceased. He was assited by Elder M.M. Canine. The funeral text was taken from St. Luke, Chapter 14, Verse 28. The favorite songs of Mr. Canine were sung by a special choir led by Wm. Servies. The remains were borne to their final resting place by old neighbors and close friends: James Todd; William Jame; Milton Kirkendall; Frank Willoughby; George Loman and Gilbert Blake. There were some beautiful floral offerings among them a large number of white roses sent by the teachers of the East Chicago Schools. William Ralph Canine was born on what is now the Doc Conner farm north of Waveland, Feb 16, 1833. He was the son of Peter and Hester Ann Clark Canine. What schooling he had was at the Ben Smith School House near Pine HIll, where short subscription schools were held before the free school system was established. He married Margaret Ann McCord Oct 25, 1855. They moved immediately to the farm northeast of Waveland where they lived until the death of Mrs. Canine in 1900. Mr. Canine has continued to make his home on the old place with the daughter Bertha, his son David and finally with the grandson, Irvin C. Deere. Mr. Deere will continue to live on the place which will be managed by the sons, Charles and Nelson. WIlliam R. and Margaret Canine united with the Union Baptist Church Feb 23, 1867 and were baptized by Elder J.J. Goben May 26, 1867. Mr. Cnaine was elected a trustee of the church in 1887 and chosen deacon in 1888. To both of them the church was ever a sacred place and they lived faithful to its obligations. There were 7 children: Celia, dying in infancy; Alice L, who married Charles Deere and died in 1888, leaving t wo sons, Alonzo and Irvin who were reared by the grandparents; Chalres A, a farmer living on part of th ehome farm; David A, at one time sheriff of the county dying in 1903; Edwin N, superintendent of the East Chicago schools; Willard, who died in 1892 and Bertha E. who married Allen R. Spencer. The mother died in 1900. Mr. Canine is also survived by four brothers, two sisters: John R of Waveland; James of Advance; George W. of C'ville; Henry R of Weed, California; Mrs. Margaret McRae of Oxford and Mrs. Anna Doyel of Indianapolis. The surviving relatives wish to thank everyone for their kindness and sympathy in the hour of grief and affliction. - kbz
