Richard M. CANINE, who has been a resident of this city for more than 58 years, died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. William Bryant, on S. Washington St. at half past one this morning from the effects of pneumonia, after an illness of one week. Mr. Canine has been blind for the past two years and has been living a retired life for several years. The deceased was born in Indianapolis Jan 23, 1823. He was the son of Peter Canine, who emigrated to Indiana from Kentucky and his mother was a native of VA. He came to Crawfordsville in 1848, when he was 25 and has lived here ever since. In the earlier part of his life he was a blacksmith. Later he became an expert smithy and worked in the shops of what was now known as the Monon Railway shops, which were located here. When he severed his connection with the Monon he bought a Saw mill north of this city four miles and later disposed of his interest and with JH Canine and Isaac Wilhite purchased a planing mill and lumber yard, which was located where the Odd Fellows cemetery now is. He continued in this business until he retired. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church for almost 60 years and a consistent member and an upright citizen. He leaves a wife, Ellen and one daughter, Mrs. Bryant. The funeral will be conducted Saturday morning at 10 o'clock at the resident of Mr. and Mrs. Bryant and will be private.
