Jesse W. Canine, who has been in poor health for a long time, died at his home in Crawfordsville on Monday morning. He was the son of James R. and Sarah Proctor Canine, and was born November 25, 1871 on the old Fisher farm north of town. He married Lilia B. Hanna in 1892 who died in 1900. He 1905 he married Florence M. Clements who survives him, with two children, Mrs. Caroline Linderman and Miss Frances Mae. He was one of the first men in this section to engage in real estate selling as a regular profession, and had a wide acquaintance in the County. Crawfordsville Ind Jan 6 – Jess W. Canine, one of Crawfordsville best known citizens died at his home today following an 8-weeks illness with heart disease. Mr. Canine was born in this county in 1871. For several years he had been prominent in the business and fraternal life of Crawfordsville, devoting a large part of his time to civic enterprises. At the time of his death he was identified with several business organizations here. As organizer and manager of the Montgomery County sales pavilion he had devoted this agency into one of the largest of its kind in western or central Indiana. For many years he had been president of the Canine Investment Company. He was also the organizer and president of the Farmers and Merchants Trust Company. As a member of the Masons, Red Men, Modern Woodmen, Tribe of Ben Hur and POS of A he had taken a leading part in fraternal activities here. Since the advent of the city’s annual fall festival he had served as the general chairman. Those who survive are the widow and two daughters, all of Crawfordsville. The funeral will be held Wednesday afternoon at the First Methodist Church here. --- transcribed by kbz
