Terre Haute, June 18 -- Edwin N. CANINE, 79, director of practice teaching at Indiana State Teachers College, who for several years was a resident of Montgomery County, died Thursday at a Terre Haute hospital. He had been ill 3 months. Canine served as superintendent of the East Chicago schools from 1905 to 1925. Surviving are the widow; a son, Brig. Gen. Ralph Canine, with the US Army in Germany and a daughter, Margaret Canine, of Whiting. - kbz

Prof. Edwin N. Canine, 79, 220 Barton Ave for many years director of student teaching at Indiana State Teachers College died at 2:39 o'clock this morning at St. Anthony's Hospital. Prof. Canine had been in ill health since suffering a light stroke several months ago. He was b. at Waveland, in 1863 the son of William Ralph & Margaret Ann (McCord) Canine, who came of sturdy Scotch, Irish & Dutch ancestry. While still a boy in his teens, Mr. Canine came to TH to enter Indiana State to better qualif himself for his chosen prof. of teaching. He grad fromt he old State Normal in 1894 and later rec'd an AB from IU in 1901 and Maste rof Arts in 1929. He also did further grad.w ork at IU. Prof. Canine had a long and most successrful career as teacher, high school principal and supt of schools and prof. of educ. at Indiana State Teachers College. He start his teaching in Montogmery Co. and served at diff. times as supt of the LFora Shcools; supt of Greenwod; principal Elwood and Gas City; HS principal at East Chicago and from 1905 to 1925 as supt. of E. E. N. Canine, former Waveland boy, and now superintendent of East Chicago, Ind., was included in a list of 500 leading educators of the United States who are graduates or former students of Indiana University, in whose honor a banquet was held at Cleveland, O., last week as a feature of the annual convention of the Department of Superindence of the National Education Association. The celebration was known as “Presidents’ Homecoming Night,” and was arranged by George E. Carrothers, I.U. alumnus who is now assistant superintendent of the Cleveland schools. Among the distinguished educators present were a number of the 28 living university and college presidents or ex-presidents who are I.U. products. - kbz
