David A. Canine, ex-sheriff of this county, died at his home early Wednesday morning. He has suffered for years with stomach trouble but was in fairly good health until Sun. Death resulted from uremic poisoning. The funeral services at Union, this morning will be conducted by Elder Oliphant. The services at the grave will be in charge of the Master Masons under direction of Judge J. E. West. Mr. C. was b. June 26, 1866. He attended the Waveland schools and the State Normal. For a number of years he taught school and worked on the farm of his Father, William H. Canine. In 1896 he was elected sheriff of the county and was reelected two years later by an increased majority. After the close of his second term he took charge of his father's farm. He marr. Miss Effie May PRESTON of Lagrange Aug 11, 1897. She, with an infant son, survives him. He was a member of the Elks, POS of A, K of P, Ben Hur, Masons and Commandery. He was very popular with all classes, being genial and kind hearted and generous to fault. A host of friends regret his sudden death and sympathize deeply with the bereaved wife and father. Crawfordsville, Nov 4 – David C. Canine, ex-sheriff, died this morning at his home near Waveland. He was afflicted with acute Bright’s disease. He was 37 years old and left a widow and son. He belonged to the Masons, Elks, POS of A, Ben Hur and K of P.  His funeral will be held on Friday at Union Chapel near Waveland. – kbz

This morning at his home north of Waveland occurred the death of David C. Canine, one of the most popular and well known citizens of Montgomery County and for four years sheriff, being succeeded by the present incumbent, Charles D. McCaullough. The death of Mr. Canine comes as a great shock even to his immediate family for although he has been in ill health for several months there was no apprehensions until Monday morning when he was taken worse, being confined to his room. But not until yesterday was it supposed that he would not recover. He gradually grew worse and passed away at 5 o'clock this morning, death being caused by uremic poisoning. David C. Canine was born in June 1866 at the home of his parents. Mr. and Mrs. WR Canine, 4 miles NE of Waveland where he was raised. He attended the common schools in Waveland, afterwards going to the state normal at TH. Mr. Canine received the nomination for county sheriff on the Democratic ticket, being elected in 1896 and reelected 98, running far ahead of his ticket. Mr. canine was married in Aug of 1907 (1897) to Miss Effie Preston, of LaGrange and to them has been born one child, Albert Preston. Mr. Canine was a member of many fraternal orders, the Masons, Knight of Pythias, Elks and Ben Hur. The funeral of David A. Canine was held at Union Church Friday morning at 11 o'clock. The attendance was very large. Pallbearers were: B.T. Merrill; James Harding; Charles Long; Dr T.Z. Ball; C.I. Alspaugh and Frank Willoughby. By request of the deceased Elder J.H. Oliphant of Crawfordsville preached the funeral sermon and Judge Jere West conducted the impressive Blue Lodge ceremonies at the grave. There was a large attendance of Masons from the Waveland Lodge; Crawfordsville and other nearby points. The other lodges to which Mr. Canine belonged were represented by committees. Floral offerings were made by Crawfordsville Commandery No 25 KT; Ben Hur POS of A; Elks; County officials; Crawfordsville business men; Eastern Star; Waveland Lodge F & AM; Knights of Pythias and Current Events Club. Among those present from Crawfordsville were: Judge West; Major Foote; Walter Sparks; Ed VanCamp; Jack Rowe; George S. Harney; Harry Daugherty; Hal Ensminger; Dumont Kennedy; Sam Symmes; Charles Joseph: Charles McCullough; Bud Barton; Taylor Thompson; George T. Griffith; George A. Cole; Chas Bettis; John Johnson; John Warbritton; Thomas Nolan; Chase Harding; Jesse Muriette; George Graham and Lee Warner. James Canine of Advance, George Canine of Crawfordsville, Jas Elder of Rockville; Mrs. John Oldman and daughter of Russellville and Elder CG Airhart and wife of Roachdale were also among those present. The following resolutions were prepared by a committee appointed by Rathbone Lodge NO 232, K of P. "The frailty of human life, the uncertainty of human desire, the end of human destiny has again been brought before us.. In the midst of life, we are in death. Whereas, in His infinite wisdom and justice, it has pleased Almighty God to remove from our midst our friend and brother, David A .Canine, and holding him as we do in the most sincere respect and esteem, and cherishing the tenderest remembrances of him, be it 'resolved that the altar and the charter of Rathbone Lodge No 232, K of P, be draped in mourning for 30 days. Resolved, that his Lodge through our committee appointed, extend the bereaved family our heartfelt sympathy, trusting that He who alone can comfort, may support and sustain them in the hour of their great bereavement, and be it further resolved that a copy of these resolutions be spread upon the minutes of this lodge, a copy be sent to the family of the deceased, and that a copy be placed for publication with the Waveland Independent and with each of the Crawfordsville papers. The family of David Canine wish to express their earnest appreciation for the sympathy shown them by their neighbors and friends and by the various fraternal orders in their hour of sorrow. - transcribed by kbz

"The Call of Death" -- David A. Canine died last Wednesday at his home near Waveland. He had been sick only a few days from uremic poisoning. He was born in June 1866 and has resided in Brown Township the mot of his life, and he has served two terms as sheriff. He taught school after graduating at the State Normal. He leaves a wife and infant son. Funeral n Friday at Union Chapel, conducted by Rev. Oliphant. Mr. Canine was a member of thee Masons, POS of A, K or P, Ben Hur and Elks.
