Chester Donald "Chigger" Caldwell, 53, retired Crawfordsville Police lieutenant, died at 3:36 a.m. Friday in Culver Hospital. He resided at 410 Covington St. He was a member of the Fraternal Order of Police and Moose and Eagles Lodges. Mr. Caldwell joined the force in June 1957, was promoted to the rank of sergeant in June 1971, then advanced to lieutenant in the latter part of 1974. He retired in April of this year. Born May 1, 1923, at Crawfordsville, he was a son of Chester S. and Nannie Todd Caldwell. He was graduated from Crawfordsville High School. Surviving are his father; a son, Donnie at home; four daughters, Mrs. Tom (Barbara) Scaggs of Crawfordsville, Mrs. Keith (Alice) Grimes of Lake Holiday, Mrs. Clyde (Kay) Endicott of Hoopeston, Ill., and Kathy at home; a brother Ralph of Okeechobee, Fla.; a sister, Mrs. Alva (Vivian) Grimes of Crawfordsville; and six grandchildren. Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday in Powers Funeral Home at Crawfordsville with the Rev. Lester McGruder officiating. Burial will be in Masonic Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home after 2 p.m. Sunday.--waw
