Staff Sgt. George E. Burchett, 36, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ray Burchett, Rt. 3, Crawfordsville, died Sept. 18 in Viet Nam, the parents were notified Wednesday. Announcement of Sgt. Burchett's death was made by Maj. Gen. J.C. Lambert of the Adjutant General's office in Washington. A veteran of 18 years service with the 101st Airborne Infantry, Sgt. Burchett died of wounds in the legs while serving with a "search and destroyā€¯ unit of his division. The 101st Airborne is often referred to as the "Screaming Eagles." Sgt. Burchett was born in Liberty, Ky., where he spent his boyhood. He enlisted at the age of 18 and received his high school education while in service with the Army. Tours of duty included service with the occupational forces in Korea and Germany. He served twice in Germany, first in 1950 and 1951 and three years beginning in 1956. Survivors include the parents, who live near Alamo; the widow, Mrs. Virginia Burchett of Bloomington, Ill.; a son, Jimmy, a daughter, Georgina, and two brothers, Don Burchett of Alamo and Dallas Burchett of Roachdale.
