Prudence Surface, daughter of Thomas and Mary Ann Surface, was born Jan. 29, 1854 in Montgomery County, Indiana and died Sunday Aug. 17, 1924 at the Iroquois Hospital at Watseka, Illinois at the age of 70 years, 6 months and 19 days. She was united in marriage to Rev. Levi Byrd March 16, 1875. To this union were born eight children, four boys and four girls. Harvey Thomas, Mary Alice Rothenberger and Emiline Elizabeth Phelps preceeded their mother in death. She leaves to mourn a husband and four children, Lydia Effie Allman of Clio, Michigan Nellie Artensia Hickman of Milford Illinois, Charles Reuben of Detroit, Michigan and Leslie of Cleveland, Ohio. She also leaves one brother George Surface of Fulton, Indiana and one sister, Ella Ridge of Hamblin, Montana, ten grand children and four great grand children. Mrs. Byrd joined the United Brethren Church at the ago of about 12 years and was a true Christian until death. She was a most faithful wife and mother. For the past fifteen years she and Mr. Byrd have resided in Rossville. About six weeks ago, on account of ill health of Mr. Byrd they went to Milford to stay with their daughter, Mrs. Hickman. About ten days ago Mrs. Byrd took ill and was taken to the hospital for an operation from which effects she died. Mr. Byrd was too ill to attend the funeral, which was conducted at the U. B. Church by Rev. Pellum, Wednesday morning, assisted by D. C. Ade. Music was furnished by Mr. and Mrs. P. M. Warner, S. M. LeNeve and Bernice Byrne with Mrs. Merritt at the piano. The pall bearers were Geo. Ray, Oscar Funk, N. J. Smith Perry Buckner M. E. Scarlett and Jake Payne. Burial was in the Rossville cemetery. - contributed obituary
