Butcher - Frankie

Last Monday at the home of Frank Butcher, 210 West Spring Street occured quite a distressing accident. The 12-year-old daughter of the family, Frankie, started to remove a coal oil lamp from one room to the other and as a result of some defect either in the oil or lamp, an explosion occurred. Instantly the child was wrapped in flames and her terrified cries simply aroused the neighborhood. Mrs. Butcher rushed to her child's assistance and was possessed of sufficient presence of mind to smother the flame with a blanket. In doing this, however her hands and arms were sadly burned. The child suffered some terrible and very paintful although it is thought not fatal burns. From her waist up she is simply a mass of blisters, her face and arms suffering particular. Her hair and eyebrows were burned off, but her sight is not impaired. That she escaped death is remarkable and can be attributed only to the prompt action of her mother.
