ELIZABETH WEBSTER MILLIGAN BURFORD

Source: Waveland Independent, May 4, 1917

Mrs. Jesse Burford died at Culver Hospital Thursday evening of last week. Funeral services were conducted at the home on Sunday afternoon at 2, by Rev. J.T. Boyer, assisted by Rev. J.E. Stone. Interment at Maple Ridge. Elizabeth Webster Milligan daughter of John W. and Josephine Hanna Milligan, was born in Waveland July 13, 1867. Here she spent the first 16 years of her life, removing with her parents to Topeka, KS in 1884. At an early age she united with the Presbyterian Church in Waveland and throughout her life remained a consistent Christian, wielding a quiet and far-reaching influence for good upon all with whome she came in touch. April 28, 1898, she was united in marriage to Jesse Morton Burford. To this union was born one son, Harold James who died at age 6. Nearly three years ago her health began to fail. Everything that loving hearts and skilled physicians could do was done to restore her to health but all efforts were in vain and on Thursday evening, June 14, 1917 she quietly fell asleep, aged 49 years 11 months 1 day. Her life was quiet and unassuming, yet everyone who knew her felt the wealth of her character. She was an uplift to the lives that touched hers, even remotely and strengthened and made better those more closely associated with her. Her faith in her Creator and her devotion to His cause were felt by all. Always cheerful and hopeful during her long illness, wholly submissive and never murmuring, she inspired and encouraged everyone around her. She leaves to mourn her loss, a devoted husband, a loving mother and one brother, William D. Milligan, many other relatives and a host of friends. As her life was lived in this community, no further eulogy is necessary. To know her was to lover her; to have lived beside her means to have been made better for her having lived.
