Bryant - William - 1906

Obituary found on findagrave entry for William Bryant – unsure of actual newspaper (Darlington? Crawfordsville? Lafayette?) but dated Friday, July 20, 1906

William Bryant, residing six miles west of Colfax, in Montgomery County died Thursday night at 7:30 o’clock from the infirmities of old age. Mr. Bryant was 82 years old (sic) and was the wealthiest farmer in Montgomery County.  He was the owner of over 2,000 acres of land before he gave each of his five children 240 acres. At the time of his death he was still the owner of a large tract. By skillful investments in land and hard work, Mr. Bryant amassed his vast fortune. He came to his present location in Montgomery County 60 years ago and during all of these years he has been a great money maker in stock and lands. When he had money to invest he never lost the opportunity of investing it in land. About 30 years ago he built a mansion of 17 rooms on his home farm at a cost of $16,000.  This house is finished on the inside with the very finest of walnut lumber. The house now after 30 years use, is better than most new houses. Mr. Bryan’s kiln dried all the lumber he had in the house. His wife died a year ago. His children are: Mrs. Mary Taylor; Mrs. Anna Clark; Mrs. Belle Jenkins; Mrs. Maria Kirkpatrick and Mrs. Clora Coyner who died about 5 years ago. Mrs. Coyner is the mother of Mrs. James P. Casey of Colfax an only child.  (hand written “had brother William).  Mr. Bryant was a liberal contributor to church but it was only about 16 years ago that he joined the Christian church.  He was not a member of any lodge. Mr. Bryant was a man whose integrity was never questions and whose word was as good as gold. The funeral services were held Saturday at 2:30 o’clock, Rev. AW Jackman of Monticello officiating. Burial at Union Cemetery – Frankfort Times.
