NEWTOWN — Max H. Bruner, 87, Newtown, died in the VA Illiana Health Care System, Danville, Ill., on Sunday, May 25, 2008, at 5:17 p.m. CDT. Max was born in Cayuga, on December 9, 1920. He was the son of the late Harven and Eleanor V. Philpott Bruner. He had lived most of his life in Fountain County and for the past sixty years in Newtown. Max owned and operated a service station in Newtown with his brother, Bob Bruner for many years. He was a veteran of WW II serving in the U. S. Army. He served as an airplane mechanic and at the time of his discharge, he obtained the rank of Sergeant. He enjoyed fishing and hunting. Max married Verna E. Bell on June 11, 1942 in Wingate, IN. She preceded him in death on February 3, 1989. Surviving are a daughter Linda M. Ungersma, Linden; two sisters, Kathleen Ashwill, Wallace and Mary Alice (Earl) Shaffer, Indianapolis; three grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a son, Max V. Bruner; three brothers, Wayne, Bob and Reid Bruner; a sister, Phyllis Bruner. A military gravesite service and burial were held at the Wallace Lutheran Cemetery, Wallace, on Wednesday, May 28th, with the V.F.W. Chaplain officiating.
