Brown - Matthew - daus

From the Columbus, Kansas Journal we learn that during a recent storm there the dwelling of Matthew Brown, who formerly resided near Darlington, in this county, was blown down, killing two daughters and injuring several other members of the family. Between 8 and 9 o’clock, just after the family had retired, they were aroused by the trembling of the house and the cracking of the timbers. During a momentous lull Mr. Brown reached the door but before he could rescue the family, the wind retuned in all its fury, completely upsetting the house and burying the family beneath. Mr. Brown received injuries upon his head and side which are not considered serious. Mrs. Brown received injuries upon the face and head. Three of the children were injured quite badly. A daughter, Miranda, had her neck broken and body badly bruised. Another daughter, Carrie, was crushed by the falling timbers. Only one member of the family escaped unhurt. The family was kindly cared for by the neighbors. Their many friends about Darlington will sympathize deeply with them in this terrible affliction. -s
