The funeral of Mrs. John Breaks, Sr., occurred Saturday, Feb. 13, at 10 a.m. at the old home place, four and one half miles northwest of the city. Reading of scriptures and address of consolation to family by J. R. Breaks, son of deceased, prayer by Rev. J. G. Stephens. Interment was at Oak Hill.
Caroline Jane Groenendyke was born in the Breaks neighborhood June 20, 1836. She grew up in a time when nearly all that was eaten and worn was produced and manufactured at home, and she and her sisters became noted as good cooks and industrious and economical housekeepers.
Deceased was married to John Breaks Nov. 1854. To this union ten children were born, five of whom preceded the mother to the better land. In 1855, Mrs. Breaks united with the M. E. Church at old Roberts’ Chapel and continued a member of the same till death. During most of her married life she was an invalid and often an intense sufferer. Her last illness was marked by sweetness of spirit and trust in God. Wednesday night, Feb. 17, at 11 p.m. her spirit returned to God who gave it and the poor body that had suffered so much was at last beyond the reach of pain. Cherished form of our dear mother we leave thee in the realm of rest and painlessness. And thou, real mother, spiritual, immortal mother ever bless us by they sweet presence and influence. God grant that by and by we shall all be reunited in the kingdom of the Father of families.
