ELIZABETH BROOKS BRYANT

Source: Crawfordsville Daily Journal Tuesday 12-31-1918

Mrs. J.E. Bryant was born in Somersetshire, England June 21, 1841 and died Dec 21, 1918 at the age of 77 years 6 months. She was one of a family of 4 children, two brothers and one sister. Her maiden name was Elizabeth J. Brooks. She came to America in 1853 and in 1863 she was married to William J. Bryant in Lee County, Virginia. In an early date in 1869 they drove through from Virginia to Jamestown, Indiana and settled there. They lived there until 1888. For many years she took care of the Christian Church and the IOOF Hall at Jamestown. During this time they adopted one child, J.W. Bryant. In 1888 they moved to Crawfordsville where they made their home until she was left a widow June 8, 1897. She lived at 315 E. Franklin Street up until two years when she made her home with her son, JW Bryant. She was a member of the Christian Church over 55 years. She was a kind and loving mother and leaves behind one son and one grandson, Forest M. Bryant who is with the infantry school of arms now stationed at Columbus, GA. No mother ever loved her children more than she did; no mother was any more self-sacrificing than she; always wanting to do something for someone. Her kind face will be sadly missed I am sure by us but the effect of her gentle life can never be lost to us. The beautiful inspired her the right the honorable guided her and after the attack or stroke, she fell asleep and never know us anymore. She fell asleep in the arms of Jesus and we all hope to so live as to meet her again some sweet day while the golden tints of the setting sun were gilding the western hills and the blue canopy was giving back the beautiful reflection to the source of its light, and the shadows were lengthening and the evening of life's day had fallen upon her,. She saw not the shades but instead she viewed with heavenly delight the sunkissed land where day has no evening. She leaves to mourn her loss one son, one grandson and a great number of friends. -- kbz
