WILLIE LEE BROCK

Source: Crawfordsville Journal, Saturday, April 4, 1908

Willie Lee Brock, son of Noah and Emily Church Brock was born near Farmington, Forsyth county, North Carolina, February 13, 1867, and departed this life at Smith's Grove, Davie county, North Carolina, March 15, 1908,aged 41 years, 1 month, and 1 day. When about 6 years of age he came with his parents to Indiana and has since resided in this state. On December 25, 1900, he was happily married to Edith M. Gregg. He had been a sufferer from asthma for several months and in the early winter went south, hoping the change of climate would be beneficial to him and did improve much for a while, but a few days before his death his asthma returned with apparent new vigor. He was under the care of his uncle, Dr. Kimbrough of Smith's Grove, where he made many friends and all that loving hand would do was done, but the good Lord called him home. The news of his death came as a shock to his relatives and friends. He was so exceptionally kind, loving son and brother, a very kind, loving, devoted companion and loved by all for his friendly congenial nature. He found great comfort in the reading of the Holy word and often expressed a desire to live nearer his God, and about two weeks before his death, while talking to an uncle, having begun the conversation himself concerning the future he said, "I have made all preparations." Only a few minutes before the last came his mother and asked him if he was trusting in Jesus and he decidedly said that he was. Then raising his hand toward heaven he said, "Tell all to meet me in heaven." He retained his consciousness to the last and shortly before his spirit took its fight he said, "Shall I go to sleep?" When told to go to sleep he peacefully fell into a natural sleep and also asleep in Jesus. His bright testimony gives us such a blessed assurance that we have a treasure in heaven. The funeral conducted at the home of his parents March 20. His uncle Rev. George Church officiated. The text was "Blessed are the dead that die in the Lord." Scripture reading, First Corinthians, 15:46-58; Romans 8:31-39; John 14: 1-3. The sermon was excellent and so consoling to the grief stricken relatives. A quartette of friends sweetly sang "Asleep in Jesus, Blessed Sleep," "Lead Kindly Light" "We Are Going Down the Valley One by One" and "God Be With You Till We Meet Again." There were many beautiful flowers consisting of a large pillow and a cross, also a large bouquet given by Johnson county relatives and two intimate friends. The body was lovingly laid to rest in the I.O.O.F. cemetery at Darlington, Indiana. He leaves to mourn his loss a heart-broken wife, father, mother, one brother, two sisters, many relatives and a host of friends.
