Source: Waveland Independent, Jan 25, 1901

William H. BRIDGES a well known citizen of Waveland died at his home on W. Main St at 2 o'clock Sunday afternoon. His final illness attacked him nearly a year ago and soon developed unmistakable symptons of consumption. The end came peacefully. He was born in the northern part of Fleming County, Kentucky March 28, 1838. Shortly afterwards his parents removed to Mason County, where he received such education as was given in the day schools. At the age of 17 he joined the Baptist church under the preaching of Rev. A. Stockwell. In 1859 he came to Indiana and located in Green Twp, Parke County. He enlisted in the army in 1861 being one of the first soldiers to be sworn in under the first call for 75,000 men. He served 47 months and was promoted to 1st Lt. for promptness in drill and other duties. While yet in the service he was married Jan 12, 1864 to Nancy C. GROVES. To them were born 3 children, Charles, Edward and Lillie, none of whom survive. At the organization of the Christian Church in Waveland in 1867 he became a member and has remained such since filling with credit many official positions but more especially associated with the choir as he was an enthusiast in music. The funeral sermon was preached Tuesday afternoon by Rev EE Moorman after which Rev LF Galey spoke a few fitting words referring to his long friendship with the dead man and paying a touching tribute to his character. The chair which Mr. Bridges had occupied in the choir was draped in black. Upon the casket were several floral offerings and the collar indicating the rank of Past Noble Grant Master in the IOOF Lodge which body formed the escort and conducted the ceremonies at the grave in the New Cemetery. - kbz
