Mathias Brandenberger died at his home near the Junction on Monday night, after a long illness of consumption. He was an old soldier and numbered among his friends everybody who knew him. He was born in Ithaca, Darke County, Ohio, August 5, 1843. He enlisted in the Union Army at the age of 16 years, serving 3 years with Company C 101st Indiana Volunteers. After farming a short time he went to railroading and came here to take employment as an engineer on the old IB&W Railroad. In 1876 he married Rhoda Reddenbaugh, who with a son, Marvin, survive him. He was a member of McPherson post GAR and of Milligan Memorial Chapel in this city. His funeral was from the chapel on Wednesday at 2 o'clock under the auspices of the GAR, and was conducted by Rev. Thornton D. Fyffe - kbz

Matthias C. Brandenburg died at 9 o’clock last evening at the family residence on Mill Street after a lingering and painful illness. Matthias C. Brandenburg was born August 5, 1843, near Ithica, Dark County, Ohio and died Feb 4, 1901, aged 57 years 5 months and 29 days. At the age of 16 he removed to Marion, Indiana, where he remained until the Civil War broke out in which he served 3years with Co I, 101 Ind Vols. And was honorable discharged by reason of expiration of his term of service. Then he farmed for one year, after which he took up the trade of engineer. He commenced railroading, in which work he continued 11 years. He worked until his health completely broke down. In 1873 he removed to Crawfordsville where he had since remained with the exception of three years. Two of those he spent in Urbana and one in Marion. In 1875 he was married to Rhoda J. Rendenbaugh, who was his loving companion, through his last sickness. One son, Marvin born in 1879 was the result of this marriage. Mr. Brandenburg was a member of McPherson Post No 7, GAR and of the Memorial Presbyterian Chapel. The funeral will occur at 2 o’clock tomorrow afternoon at Memorial Chapel under the auspices of the GAR Rev TD Fyffe will conduct the service. – transcribed by kbz
