Bowers - Abner

AN OLD SETTLER. - Abner Bowers, an old resident of Bower's Station, and from which that place derived its name, and at one time a resident of this vicinity, called on us last Saturday. Mr. Bowers gave us his experience in this county in an early day. He had resided in this vicinity 48 years, and remembers well when such a place as Colfax was not thought of only as a sporting ground, having killed deer where the town now stands, and remembers when the poles were chopped for the first log cabin. He says, as did Mr. Bush, that a young man could get a start easier in those days than he can at the present time, as a big buck deer was worth the price of an acre of land, and he still retains his old flintlock that in early days was of considerable service to him, especially when game was plentiful. Mr. Bowers has raised a family of nine children, all of whom are living, and are away from home, some of them possessed of large families, and we believe Mr. Girt, our dry goods merchant, married one of the daughters. Mr. Bowers, while in the city, learned of the serious illness of Mr. Kendall, and lost no time in getting to his bedside and expressing deep regret at finding him in such feeble health, and remained with him sometime cheering him up by talking of the good times they enjoyed 30 years ago. We would be glad to have Mr. Bowers calling us again, although we cannot entertain him by talking of olden times, yet our exchanges are at his disposal. – thanks to Lena H
