Verner L. Bowers, 85, of 714 S. Green St., former county sheriff and postmaster, died at 1:15 a.m. Tuesday at Culver Hospital. He had been in failing health for several months. Mr. Bowers served as sheriff of Montgomery County from 1932 to 1936. He was superintendent of the State Penal Farm from 1938 to 1946. He served as postmaster of Crawfordsville from 1948 to his retirement in 1963. Prior to that he was Democratic county sheriff. He was a member of the Eagles Lodge. He was a graduate of Crawfordsville high School and a 1912 graduate of Wabash College. He played professional baseball after college as a catcher. He also farmed south of Crawfordsville in his early life. Born Feb. 22, 1886, near Alamo, he was a son of George and Jane Denman Bowers. He was married April 20, 1916, to Wila Baber. Survivors include his widow; a daughter, Miss Betty Bowers of Indianapolis, and a son, Robert of Crawfordsville. Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday in Hunt & Son Funeral Home. Burial will be in Masonic Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home after 2 p.m. Wednesday.
