Funeral services for the late Benjamin Booher, formerly a resident of Montgomery county, took place this (Friday) afternoon at the home in Lebanon where he died Thursday afternoon about 3 o'clock. Mr. Booher was born near Bristol, Sullivan county, Tennessee, Sept. 5, 1821. He was an uncle to the famous Booker brothers of Darlington and at one time resided near that town and joined the Lutheran church, in which he was an active worker and often visited when near his old home. Mr. Booher had been ill for about a year with abdominal tumor and, although he was aware of his condition,he kept it a secret from his family, knowing that there was no relief for him. The last time he appeared in public was election day when he voted. He was married at Zionsville, Oct. 24, 1842, to Margaret Beeler, who preceded him in death. Eleven children were born to this union, of whom ten are living. His second wife was Mrs. May Smith, who survives him. The decedent was 13 years old when he came with his parents from Tennessee and settled on a farm near Darlington. His father was Jacob Booher, a Pennsylvania German who was of the pioneers who blazed the way in what was then the wilderness of the west. Following Mr. Booher;s first marriage he settled in what is now Whitestown , Boone county, and purchased 90 acres of dense wilderness. This lad he cleared himself and by thrift and hard work accumulated a fortune. He soon owned 1500 acres in Boone county and a few years ago he divided his property among his ten children, giving each a comfortable fortune and retaining just enough to keep him in his declining years. Some time ago he retired and moved to Lebanon. At one time he was trustee of Worth township. Mr. Booher was a man of remarkable physical strength and even in his later years was unusually active. Fourteen grandchildren and one great grandchild are living.
THANKS: so much to Cheryl F. for this one :)
