John C. Bible died at 12:55 o’clock Sunday afternoon at his home northwest of New Richmond. He had been in ill health for many weeks, though he had grown much better until Wednesday of last week when he suffered a stroke of paralysis which resulted in his death.  An autopsy by Dr. Washburn of New Richmond and Dr. Hamilton of Waynetown resulted in the finding that Mr. Bible had suffered a hardening of the arteries the stroke of paralysis hastening the end. He was 71 years old. He leaves beside the widow, two children, one son, Emery and one daughter, Mary. Mr. Bible is survived by one sister, Mrs. Susan Geiger of Goodland, Kansas and one brother, William E. Bible of Medaryville; these being all that are left of a once large family.  Mr. Bible was a veteran of the Civil War, through which he served as a soldier in the 72nd Indiana Infantry, Wilder’s Brigade. He was a member of the Grand Army of the Republic and was also a member of the New Richmond Lodge of Masons.  He was a successful farmer and quite well known in this community which he had made his home the greater part of his life. The funeral occurred from the New Richmond Methodist Church at 2 o’clock Tuesday afternoon, conducted by Rev. HC Weston of Winamac, assisted by Rev. HD Dick, pastor of the New Richmond church, the Masons having charge of the burial. The interment was made in the New Richmond cemetery. -

He was a member of Co. E, 72d Indiana Volunteer Mounted Infantry, enlisting on July 25, 1862, and later identified with Wilder’s Lightning Brigade. He was honorably discharged on July 24, 1865. He was an active member of the G. A. R. of New Richmond. He was an ardent member of the Masonic Order, being first a member at Wingate and later a charter member of the New Richmond F. & A. M., also a charter member of the New Richmond chapter of the Eastern Star, being Worthy Patron at the time of his death. He was always an earnest persistent worker. In the early part of his life he became identified with the M. E. church at Sugar Grove. He was a kind and indulgent father and husband and devoted to Ins home and family. He was a sufferer from heart trouble and paralysis and at the last of hie sickness, hardening of the arteries. His last illness was a duration of only two months.  The funeral occurred from the New Richmond M. E. church at 2 o’clock Tuesday afternoon, conducted by Rev. H. C. Weston, assisted by Rev. H. D. Dick. The interment was made in the New Richmond cemetery.
Seven of John C. Bible’s company and regiment that saw heroic service in the Civil War, Company E, 72nd Indiana, were here Tuesday to attend Mr. Bible’s funeral. They were John Plunkett of Marion, Thomas Haywood and Mr. Williams of Lafayette, Ambrose Remley and Alfred Lolland of Crawfordsville, and Caleb Thayer of Linden. Several of these surviving old soldiers are also members of the same Post as was Mr. Bible, Steadman Post, No. 245.
We wish to thank our many friends and neighbors, the G. A. R., the Masons and Eastern Star for their servicer, flowers and sympathy shown us during the sickness and death of our loving husband, father and brother. Sarah L. Bible, Children, and W. E. Bible.

John C. Bible was born February 7, 1842, departed this life April 27, 1918, at 12:15 p. m., being 71 years, 2 months and 20 days old. He was born near Sugar Grove, Indiana. He was a son of George and Celia Bible and was the oldest of nine children.  He spent his entire life in Tippecanoe county on a part of the Bible homestead, except three years devoted to the service of his country. On November 80, 1882, he was united in marriage to Sarah L. Hamilton. To this union two children were born, James Emery and Mary Lemora. He was a member of Co. Whereas, The Grand Master of the Universe, in his wise providence, has called from our midst our esteemed and venerable brother, John G. Bible, to that celestial lodge above, Be it Resolved, That in the death of our worthy brother that New Richmond Lodge, No. 604, F.,& A. M., has lost a true and faithful member whose hand was ever stretched forth to assist and whose counsel was timely and good. Be it Resolved, That a copy of these resolutions be presented to the family, to the New Richmond Record for publication, and one spread on record of the minutes of the Lodge. L. P. For a time we have walked with him in the pilgrimage of life and around the same altar have learned the lessons of our Order.  Remembering his many virtues we are indeed mourners, and in the bouse of sorrow we would drop the tear of affectionate sympathy. Therefore be it Resolved, That the New Richmond Chapter No. 377 Order of Eastern Star has lost one of its most faithful members. Be it further Resolved, that we extend our tenderest sympathy to the family.  Be it further  Resolved, that a copy of these resolutions be given to the family, one presented to the New Richmond Record for publication and one spread on the minutes of our chapter.
