Death with its double portion has come to another of our homes and the shadow that darkens the sunlight of happiness and drops bitterness into the cup of joy, has brought sadness and sorrow to loving hearts in the removal of a kind father and mother and two of Waynetown's most respected citizens, Mr. and Mrs. J.M. Birdcell. For some time Mr. Birdcell has been in failing health and the first of last week his condition became more critical. At the same time, Mrs. Birdcell, who had been in her usual good health complained of not being well and continued to grow worse until on Sunday morning when she died. During her sickness Mr. Birdcell continued to grow worse until on Monday evening death came and - companions in childhood, lovers in young manhood and womanhood and united by the ties that a kind husband and wife through life, it seemed fitting, that passing down the stream of life together, together they should continue their voyage out into the great ocean of eternity and side by side tender and loving hands placed them in the death chamber, and a few hours later together they lay them side by side in the same grave. John Martin Birdcell was born in Hamilton County, Ohio, Jan 30, 1837; died Oct 21, 1901 age 64 years, 8 months 21 days. Amanda Birdcell was born in Hamilton County, Ohio Jan 24, 1837 , and died Oct 20, 1901 aged 64 years 8 months 26 days. They were married May 12, 1857 and to this union two children were born - John J. Birdcell who survives them and Sarah E, who died in 1880. Mr. and Mrs. Birdcell moved from Ohio to this state in 1866, locating about 5 miles south of town and there they lived until about 2 years ago when they came to Waynetown and have since made their home among us. Early in life both united with the Christian Church but were not identified with the church here. Mr. Birdcell had been a member of the Odd Fellow's lodge for many years uniting with the order in Ohio and with the lodge here when coming among us. Mr. Birdcell leaves a brother and two sisters and Mrs. Birdcell a sister and two brothers and both a son, who devoted in his every attention attended them with a loving heart and hand in their last hours, and whose sorrow calls the deepest sympathy of all. Mr. and Mrs. Birdcell were among our best people. No great eulogy can be said than that they were good citizens, kind and accommodating and ready to respond in the hour of sorrow or need. The funeral service was conducted at the residence Wednesday forenoon by Rev. J.P. Henson one of the largest funeral assemblages being present ever witnessed before in the town. The interment took place at the Masonic cemetery under the auspices of the members of the IOOF Lodge - kbz

Martin Birdsel died Monday evening at 5 o’clock at his home in Waynetown, the immediate cause being paralysis. As was stated in The Journal Monday Mrs. Birdsel preceded him to the other world only a day.
They were both born in Hamilton County , Ohio , near Cincinnati , in 1837, he on Jan. 30 and she on Jan. 27. They were brought up together and in the course of time were married. In 1866 they moved to this county where Mr. Birdsel followed his trade as a carpenter for many years. For eleven years he was in the undertaking business with his son, John, at Waynetown.
The worthy couple was loved and respected by a large circle of friends. The funeral occurred on Wednesday morning at 10 o’clock, conducted by Rev. Mr. Henson, of Covington , and was under the auspices of the Odd Fellows. - s
