Rockville, Ind Feb 1 – Parke County Sheriff Charles A. Cooper has appointed his brother, Ralph 46 as second deputy sheriff to fill a vacancy created by the death Jan 9 of Deputy Fred Bennett. The new appointee lives one and one half miles south of Rockville on the Catlin Road. He is a native of Parke County. – kbz

Rockville, Ind Jan 10 – Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at the Butler Funeral Home for Parke County Deputy Sheriff, Fred Bennett, 63, the apparent victim of a self-inflicted gunshot wound. The Rev. JO Trousdale will officiate and burial will be in Roselawn cemetery. The body of the law officer was found Tuesday morning in the garage of his home here. He was found in his car by Sheriff Charles A. Cooper and another deputy, Max Webb. Coroner Thomas Mack said death was the result of a revolver shot in his right temple. The officers went to Bennett’s home after he failed to appear for duty as usual. Friends said they knew of no reason for the act. Bennett had been a deputy since January 1960. Bennett who formerly was employed by Standard Materials Corporation of Terre Haute was born in Lyford and had lived there until about two years ago when he moved to this community. His widow, Serana was at work at the Indiana State Sanitarium east of here when the tragedy happened. Other survivors include three sons: Raymond, Lyford; James, RR Paris and Stanley, Hillsboro; three daughters: Mrs. Marie Baysinger, Lyford; Mrs. Betty Miller, Fillmore; and Mrs. Martha Davis, Walnut Ridge, Ark. Two brothers, Ralph of RR 1, Rosedale and Claude, Terre Haute and two sisters, Mrs. Minnie Wheat, RR 1 Rockville and Mrs. Cynthia Williams, Detroit; 17 grandchildren and four great grandchildren. Friends may call at the Butler Chapel after 4 p.m. Wednesday. – kbz
