MARY HAMILTON BELTON

Mrs. Mary Belton, who has been critically ill for several weeks, died at her home on East Greene Street, on Sunday afternoon. Funeral services at the home on Tuesday afternoon were conducted by Rev. F. B. Solin, assisted by Rev. W. W. Speer. Interment in the Presbyterian Cemetery. The following obituary was read: Mary E. Belton was born at New Lisbon, Ohio in the year 1839, and departed this life at Waveland October 19, 1913, age 74 years, 3 mos. and 12 days. She was the oldest child of William Wallace and Isabelle McNight Hamilton, who has long since been laid to rest in the cemetery at Wooster, Ohio. Mrs. Belton was one of a family of ten children, four of whom survive her - two sisters, Mrs. Harriet Baker of Cleveland, Ohio, who was with her the last week of her illness and is here today, Mrs. Ida Iden of Akron, Ohio, and two brothers, Samuel B. Hamilton of Sandusky, Ohio, and Thomas J. Hamilton of New York. Mrs. Belton was married to Joseph Belton at New Lisbon, Ohio in 1856. To this union was born five children, two dying in infancy and three surviving, Frank M. Belton of Anahuac, Texas, Elizabeth B. Oglesbee and Carrie J. Kleiser of Waveland, all of whom were with her in the last days of sickness and at the hour of her death; five grandchildren and two great grandchildren. The first year of her married life she lived at Alliance, Ohio, the second year at New Lisbon, and in 1859 moved to Waveland, residing here the remaining days of her life. Her husband, Joseph Belton was MAJOR in the 111th and Dec. 8, 1863 enlisted in Co.H.I.V.I. He died in the service of his country at Jeffersonville, March 28, 1865, leaving Mrs. Belton a widow at the early age of thirty. Soon after coming to Waveland she united with the Presbyterian Church, the building then standing in the cemetery near where her body is to rest.
