Simon H. Behr, 75, a native of Germany and retired pensioner of the Frisco Railway system, died at the hme of his daughter, Mrs. James Allen, 1103 Walnut avenue, at 1:05 Saturday afternoon following an illness of several years with a complication of diseases. Mr. Behr never resided in Frankfort but had often visited his children here. At one time he was employed by the Monon railway at Kirklin and remained in the position for more than sixteen years. For almost fifty years he had been employed by various railroads as foreman of sections and in repair work. For the past four years he has resided on a small farm in Smartsburg, four miles east of Crawfordsville. Five weeks ago he bcame ill and he was brought to this city by Mrs. Allen. After arriving here he gradually grew worse until the end came Saturday. He was widely known throughout Kirklin and Sugar Creek townships and had many warm friends in the south part of the county.
Deceased was the son of Frederick and Katherine Behr and was born in Burford, State of Hanover, Germany, August 23, 1847. His father died when he was a young man and in order that he might support his mother he learned the tinner's trade. Being the sole support of the mother young Behr was exempted from military service in the German army. At the age of eighteen he came to the United States and a year later entered the Union army, being assigned to a New York regiment. He was discharged at Ft. Douglass, Utah, in the spring of '65.
That same year he was united in marriage to Miss Jane Carlot, of Centraliz, Missiuri(Missouri), a native of England, who came to this county with parents. For a short time he followed the tinner's trade and then accepted employment on a railroad as a section foreman. He worked for various roads and at the age of seventy years he was placed on a pension by the Frisco system and was drawing the pension at the time of his death. Following his retirement he lived with his children at various places for slightly more than a year and then purchased the 11-acre tract in Montgomery county where he resided until being brought to the Allen home. Three years ago he was stricken with paralysis and never fully recovered.
Aside from his daughter Mrs. Allen, deceased is survived by Edward Behr of this city and Rev. Harry Behr, of Cabbot, Arkansas, Cleveland Behr, of Perrigo, Ark., sons and Mrs. Emma King, of Crawfordsville, Mrs. Jesse Hardesty, of Waukeda, Oklahoma. His wife preceded him in death eight years ago.
Funeral services were held from the Allen residence at two o'clock this afternoon with the Rev. N. H. Vandervort of Kirklin officiating, assisted by Q. A. Kennedy. Interment was in the Bunnell Cemetery.
