Barlow - Francis

Source: Argos Reflector Thu 13 May 1915 p 1

Francis M. Barlow, son of John and Sarah Barlow, was born in Montgomery County, Ind Nov 11, 1844. When a young boy he moved with his parents to Marshall County and at the age of 19 years enlisted in Company E, 12th Regiment Indiana Cavalry where he served three years. He was discharged at Vicksburg, Miss Nov 10, 1865. The time that he spent in service he nobly did his duty and experienced the hardships of a soldier’s life. On June 9, 1866 he united in marriage to Elizabeth Church of Fayette County, Ind. After the marriage Mr. Barlow brought his young wife to Inwood, Marshall County where they went to housekeeping. To this union there were born six children all of whom are living except the oldest who died in infancy.  Our departed brother came to this county when the field that we now see were covered with dense forest and it was he with his axe that helped to clear off the forest to make ready for cultivation. Some 16  years ago he bought the present home in Argos. After he became afflicted he was employed as nightwatch(man) at the Schafer saw mill, which place he filled faithfully.  During the last years of his affliction he was carefully looked after by his devoted wife and companion.  While his suffering was quite severe at times he bore it patiently. There were times that he longed to go home and to be at rest, and often spoke of his mother and other dear friends who had preceded him to the Heavenly home, where all is joy and peace.  He departed this life May 3, 1915, aged 71 years 5 months and 22 days.  He leaves to cherish his memory and to mourn his departure, a wife, five children: Mrs. DD Niswonger of Elkhart, William Barlow and Mrs. Aretta A. Vance of Argos, Charles and Isaac the two younger sons that are living at home. While Brother Barlow was in the service of his country, he answered the roll call and, finally, he answered the roll call from the Father in Heaven to come up higher. Funeral services were held from the home Wednesday afternoon conducted by Rev. JC Francis, pastor of the Christian Church.  The final rites were conducted by LaFayette Gordon Post No 132 GAR of which he was a member. Interment at Maple Grove. The family and relatives wish to thank the GAR Comrades for the kindness and respect shown by them, the singers for their music and Rev. Francis for his kind and encouraging words.
