New Richmond, Ind Dec 28 – Dr. Paul J. Barcus, one of the oldest practicing physicians and surgeons in central Indiana died Sunday at his country home, southwest of Crawfordsville.  He was stricken Saturday with cerebral hemorrhage. Dr. Barcus began the practice of medicine at O’Dell’s Corner in 1885 and moved to Crawfordsville many years ago. He had an extensive practice and was an able physician and surgeon. He was born near Linden on July 13, 1862 the son of John and Katie Ebrite Barcus. He was married to Miss Susan Kirkpatrick in 1888.  Dr. Barcus attended DePauw University and was a member of the Sigma Chi fraternity. He studied medicine at the Cincinnati Medical school, graduating from that institution in 1887.  In 1906 he went to Germany and furthered his medical knowledge through study for several months at the University of Berlin.  In addition to his medical prominence he was widely respected for his qualities as a citizen. He was a member of the Wabash Avenue Presbyterian Church and of the Masonic Lodge. He is survived by his widow and two children, Gertrude Barcus and Paul K. Barcus of Crawfordsville. One sister, Mrs. Lillian Hoskins of Cleveland O and two brothers, Homer Barcus of Crawfordsville and Floyd Barcus, living in California also survive. The funeral will be held from the late home Tuesday afternoon at 2:30 o’clock. The Rev. John Allen Blair of Philadelphia will have charge of the last rites. He will be assisted by the Rev. MV Oggel, pastor of the Wabash Avenue Presbyterian Church of Crawfordsville. Burial will take place at Oak Hill Cemetery, Crawfordsville – kbz
