Dec 12 – Edward Bandel, son of Fred C. Bandel, former mayor of Crawfordsville
who died recently was a member of the American ambulance Section 626, recently
cited for bravery in France. This ambulance company is attached to the brigade
of the 2d division in the regular army. The citation was for gallant conduct in
the battle at Belleau wood and Bouresches village. Bandel was in the east
attending school when a state of war was declared and enlisted in an ambulance
company with a number of Columbia University students. He had been in active
service in France since last spring. Two sisters, Mrs. Wallace T. Linn and Mrs.
J. Frank Smith live in this city.

Ind April 4- Edward M. Bandel, a former Crawfordsville man, who went overseas
in 1917 with a Columbia University ambulance unit, has received the Croix de
Guerre from the French government for bravery under fire. Bandel was with Section
626 of the American ambulance service, attanched to the French army. His
citation was “for courage and bravery” in getting his ambulance “to a point of
succor” during the fighting in the Champagne sector Sept 26 and also on Oct 15.
Bandel was once gassed and was in the hospital for some weeks. He is a
Crawfordsville HS graduate and later he attended Columbia University. He is a
brother of Mrs. Wallace T. Linn and Mrs. J. Frank Smith of this city.
