On Tuesday evening, Allen Myers of Sugar Creek Township Parke County about 4 miles southwest of Jackville shot his brother-in-law, David Barker. Both had been drinking during the day and were surly and irritable and there had evidently been bad feeling between them previous to the encounter. Barker, accompanied by his father, went to Myers' house. They began quarrelling almost immediately but a man named Thomas Dunn who was working about the premises induced Myers to go into the house and persuaded the Barkers to quit quarreling and go home. They had approached the house from the north, and had started to leave by the back gate, leading to the west. Myers, as has already been stated went into the house, and, as it afterwards transpired got his gun. His wife, having been informed of the quarrel and warned by Dunn, endeavored to keep the furious man from leaving the house, but was unable to do so. He went to the kitchen door and as Barker came around the corner of the house he observed Myers with the gun and said tauntingly, "Shoot, you __ __ ." Myers fired the gun immediately, and Barker fell to the ground. He received the entire contents of the gun, 51 shot, in his head, face and neck. One penetrated the ball of the right eye and several lodge in the left eye any one of which the physician who was called in, said would have proven fatal. Myers left at once after the shooting and his whereabouts up to this time have not been learned. - kbz
