Charles Bacon writes from Camp Mills, Long Island NY Sept 6

We left West Point at 1:30 Tuesday. Went throughLouisville. We got to Cincinnati at 8 and were there an hour or more. Then we went through Dayton, O. We were in Ohio from 8 one night until the next evening. Then we were in PA. I mailed a card to Moody from Meadville, PA. We just went along one corner of Pennsylvania. I saw the large lake at Jacksonville, NY. What is the name of that book Mrs. . Hanna gave Vernie? We passed through that town, but I can't think of the name this morning. We got off the train at Salamanca, NY and drilled for 45 minutes. We got into Jersey City about noon Thursday. We were switched around there for an hour. Got on a boat and sailed down the river between New York City and Brooklyn. We could see away over in both cities. All kinds of boats. I saw one boat with 18 box cars on it. I also saw the large bridge connecting the two cities. Al so saw the large statue of Liberty. We were on the boat about an hour and a half, and then two hours on the train. We passed the famous Belmont race track and stopped there on a switch for awhile. Saw one race while we were there and will say they run some, too. We got into camp at 5:30. We are in tents here, and it is sure a fine looking place. The air is full of airplanes and just now I saw 8 up very close to one another. I don't know how long I will be here. We are going over to the coast the first chance we get. We had Pullman cars coming down here; one up above and two below, and there was a guard at each end of the car. I was on from two until three the first night and from 4 til 5 the second. We saw some fine country coming; also some rough places. Most of the fences in NY are built of rock. I saw many large dairy farms. ALl the cattle I saw were Holsteins. I saw a big gang of those slackers that did not register. They had them on the train taking them back t o NY City. I saw some of thoss sky scraper buildings as we came down the river. We did not have to get out of our seats to get our meals; they were brought to us. I think we will get out clothes today. We get those little caps and wrapped leggins. We are waiting for inspection now. Well mother I have told you about my trip so I will bring this to a close. Good bye, Your son, Chalres D. Bacon, 325th Field Artillery, Bat C American ExF
