Source: Crawfordsville Weekly Journal Friday, 12 April 1895

Denton H. Appleby was born at Union Mills, Maryland, May 2, 1816, and died at the home of his son, Rev. M. H. Appleby, North Indianapolis, April 5, 1895. His early life was spent in the hills of Maryland and among his playmates was the boy slave, Fred Douglas. He had been a member of the M. E. Church for 67 years and in his early life had the pleasure of listening to some of the noted Methodist preachers, among whom was the eloquent Summerfield.

Mr. Appleby was a spinner by occupation, but had long since ceased to work at the trade. The funeral services were conducted by Rev. J. C. Martin, of Mulberry, at Rossville, where the deceased formerly lived for 20 years. -s
