Crawfordsville – Ernest E. Anderson, 83, Crawfordsville was killed when he walked into the side of the locomotive of a southbound Monon railroad freight train at the East Main Street crossing at 7:10 p.m. Tuesday. He died of a crushed skull and multiple fractures. Mrs. Carole Britton of Crawfordsville who witnessed the tragedy, told police Anderson walked into the side of the locomotive with his head down and apparently never saw or heard the train. The train was No. 73, bound from Lafayette to Bloomington. Its crew included Jack Brady, conductor; Lee Sackett, engineer and James Frier and William Hurst, brakemen all of Lafayette. Also aboard was CD Haner, Lafayette, superintendent of locomotives for the railroad. Born at Ladoga, Mr. Anderson formerly operated a real estate business in Chicago and later was employed by a Chicago hardware firm and as a salesman by Milwaukee firms. Returning to Ladoga, he operated a plumbing business for several years before his retirement. Surviving with the widow, formerly Mabel Clement, who lives at Winter Park, Fla are a son John of Winter Park; a daughter, Mrs. Barbara Slater of Venice, Fla; a brother, Earl of Ladoga and a sister, Mrs. Edna Lidikay of Indianapolis. - kbz
