An Old Citizen Gone- One by one citizens are passing from us. Last week we chronicled the death of Judge Robert Taylor, and today we announce the departure of Elder John B. Austin - who died on the night of the 25th of September, in this city, at the advanced age of more than three score and ten. His death was as peaceful as the falling of a stream.
Oh no distemper, of no blast he died But like a clock worn out with eating time The wheels of mortal life stood still. Elder Austin was born October 10, 1782 near Charlottesville, Virginia, and emigrated at an early age with his father to Kentucky, In 1815 he was married to Nancy VanHook, in Harrison county, Ky., and attached himself to the Missionary Baptist Church, in same county and State in 1827: and was ordained a Minister of the Gospel in 1817.
He came to this state in the same year that he was ordained, and settled in this county, where he has since resided up to the day of his death, a period of forty years; and until within the past four years ministering in the pulpit of his Church in this and adjoining counties. The funeral of the respected deceased was preached on Sunday by Rev. Robert Moore, and his remains were followed to the grave by a large concourse of citizens. Thus are passing from our midst these pioneers who have made this country, to "blossom as the rose" and laid the foundation of those many facilities and enjoyments of a civilization by which we are benefited: and we know of no better time to ask the question, are we properly educating our youth to a due appreciation of the legacies we have received from our fathers, and which we should transmit unimpaired to those who shall come after us? - thanks to Kim H
