Archelaus C. Austin died at 12;15 o'clock this morning at his home, 312 east Main street, after an illness of several months. He was a retired farmer and was well known throughout the county. He was born here November 19, 1848, and had lived here all his life, with the exception of the time he was engaged as a soldier in the Civil war. He was a son of Samuel Wilson Austin and Nancy Bever Austin. He was the grandson of Rev. John B. Austin, one of the earliest Baptist ministers. He was educated in the schools of Crawfordsville and went from school into the Eighteenth Indiana battery, under Colonel Eli Lilly, and served until June 29, 1865. At the end of his term of service, in which he acquitted himself with honors, he returned here and engaged as a farmer, becoming one of the leaders in that line. Six years after leaving the army he was married to Annie Munns, also of Montgomery county. He was a member of the First Methodist Church and the G.A.R. and is survived by his wife, a brother, W.F. Austin; a half-sister, Mrs. George H. Grimes, and numerous cousins. Funeral services will be held Friday afternoon at 2 o'clock from his late residence, and Rev. G.W. Switzer of the Lafayette Methodist Church will officiate. Burial will be at Oak Hill cemetery. - kbz
