Wingate, Jan 4 – Mrs. May Allhands, 65, wife of Robert Allhands was killed and her son, Vernon (Bud) Allhands, 44 was badly injured when their car was demolished by a westbound Nickel Plate railroad freight train at a crossing at the east edge of Wingate at 4:30 p.m. yesterday.  They lived on a dairy farm west of here. The son was taken to Culver Hospital, Crawfordsville, suffering from severe cuts and bruises including a serious laceration on the back of his head.  Mrs. Allhands became Montgomery County’s first traffic fatality in 1952.  Mrs. Allhands and her son were returning from Crawfordsville where they had sold some calves which they had hauled in a trailer attached to their car.  Robert Rush 26 living near Wingate and William VanHook, 23 of Odell who witnessed the accident said the car, driven by the son, seemed to skid on ice and slide onto the tracks in front of the train.  Dr. Fred Blix, Montgomery County Coroner, investigated.  Mrs. Allhands belonged to the Methodist Church and Pythian Sisters and Rebekah lodges.  Besides her husband and son she is survived by another son, Raymond of Wingate and four daughters: Mrs. Jeanette Neal, Rochester, Mrs. Eleanor Scheib, Reading PA, Mrs. Ruth Rice, Crawfordsville and Mrs. Roy Shoaf, Attica and a brother, Clyde Cutrell, Danville, Illinois  --transcribed by kbz
