ALEXANDER, Byron S.
… re, where he had been a patient since December. He had been in failing health several
years. He lived all
of his life in the house where he was born on March 28, 1912
in New Richmond. He was a graduate of
New
Richmond High School.
Mr. Alexander began his career as a barber and was the recipient of the
first barber’s
license issued in the state of Indiana. He married Bernice Hinman in Crawfordsville
in 1942. They owned and
operated Alexander’s Furniture which opened in 1946. Mrs. Alexander died March 31, 1986. Mr. Alexander retired
in 1990. He was a
longtime member of New Richmond Masonic Lodge and American Legion. A veteran of World
War II, he served as a sergeant in Army Medical Corps in the
Pacific theater. A baseball enthusiast,
he formerly
was a minor league umpire for many of the Lafayette Red Sox
games at Columbian Park in the late 1940s.
Mr.
Alexander served two terms as Coal Creek Township trustee and
two terms as president of the trustees association.
There are no immediate survivors.

years were the Dick Short and Dick Hillenburg families.
