Died Allen - on January 31, 1872, Joseph Allen aged 63 years 10 months 12 days. He was born March 19, 1808 in Shelby County, Kentucky and was married to Margery James, Dec 18, 1828, in the land of his nativity and to them were born fourteen children, eight of whom are dead. Mr. Allen moved from Kentucky to Montgomery County, Indiana in November 1833, of which place he was a resident up to the time of his death. His long suffering was borne with the greatest fortitude. Being perfectly aware that his sojourn here was of a short duration, he manifested entire resignation to the Divine will. He was asked many times during his last illness if he felt ready and willing to die. His answers were that he was ready and only waited his Master’s summons. He leaves behind him a wife and family who deeply mourn his loss who recognized in him one of the most kind and indulgent of parents. Outside of his immediate relatives, his friends were many and warm and he was indebted to the partiality of his fellow citizens for several important positions of trust and honor. He has served as Sheriff of Montgomery County, and was several times elected a Representative and Senator to the Legislature of the State. - kbz
