Mrs. Katherine J. Allen, 93, one of the oldest residents of the New Market community, died Saturday at the home of a daughter, Mrs. A.J. Armentrout.
Born near New Market, Jan., 17, 1861, Mrs. Allen was their daughter of John K. and Elizabeth Coons. She married John C. Allen April 23, 1922. She was a member of the New Market Baptist Church.
Mrs. Allen was married twice. Her first husband, Edward Lawrence, who she married in November of 1890, was a former Montgomery County sheriff. Mr. Lawrence died in 1918.
Mrs. Allen, the mother of five children, was the last of a family of seven children. During most of her life she was active in church and community affairs. Known to her many friends as “Aunt Kate,” she was also one of New Market’s most highly respected women.
Surviving besides the daughter at whose home she died, are a half sister, Miss Myrtle Coons, South Bend; one grandson, L.L. Armentrout, Westfield, N.J.: three great grandsons, John A. Armentrout, in service at Columbia, S.C., Robert James Armentrout, in college in Pennsylvania, and Thomas Joseph Armentrout at home. One great great granddaughter, Carol Marie, also survives.
Mrs. Allen was preceded in death by four other children. They were a daughter who died in infancy; a son, Forest A. Allen, who died at the age of 22 months, and two daughters, Willa and Fern, who died several years ago.
Funeral services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Monday at the Noble Reeves Funeral Home in New Market. Rev. Creed Hampton will be the officiating minister. Burial will be at Indian Creek Cemetery. - thanks to Phil Coons :)
