J. Cass Mason, Captain of the Sultana.
The Project is created by theSultana-L@rootsweb.ancestry.com, a group of researchers with a interest in the ship, it's victims, and the history surrounding the disaster.
The events of April 25-27, 1865 were overshadowed by several "major" issues. President Abraham Lincoln had been assassinated a few days previously, General Lee had surrendered, and Jefferson Davis was a fugitive. The Assassin, John Wilkes Booth was the main news Item.
The event which occured at about 2 AM on April 27, 1865, was less known in severity, and the true impact on the families involved would be little known.
The Steamer Sultana designed to carry a rated 400 persons may have had over 2300 on board, and at least 2100 persons were aboard when the Boilers exploded. Because an actual roster was not kept at the time of Boarding, the actual size of this catastrophy would be unknown for some time.
The Tragedy was compounded by the fact that these doomed
passengers were recently released Prisoners of the Civil War,
Union enlisted men who were held in two of the most severe of
Confederate prisons, Cahaba, and Andersonville. 1500-1700 of
these men would perish in this incident. The lists are still
being compiled by the research group.

The above are suggested US Postage stamps to commemorate the
150th anniversary of the disaster.
