Marriages
Grace Fruits to Clarence Gilkey
Crawfordsville Weekly Journal
31 July 1903 p 7
Five Minutes Late -- Clarence Gilkey and Miss Grace Fruits of Alamo were married by H.L. Nave Friday afternoon. The courtship seems to have been of the most sirenuous sort, but, as usual, Dan Cupid won out. The match was opposed by Noah Fruits, who recently drove his daughter's suitor away at the point of a shotgun. They communicated by telephone thereafter until the opposing parent learned of it and cut the wires. To forestall an elopment he put her good clothes under lock and key, but yesterday morning she eluded his vigilance and met her lover who had borrowed his sister's best dress for the bride-elect. After arraying herself they drove furiously to Crawfordsville and were married. The couple were closely followed by Mr. Fruit who arrived just five minutes too late!
NOTE -- Grace died 13 years later in Montana.
