Bennett Beard ENGLE -- Willetta SHEPHERD

Source: New Richmond Record 18 Oct 1900 p1

On Wednesday evening of last week, October 10, at the Trinity M. E. church in Crawfordsville, occurred the marriage of Mr. Bennett Beard Engle and Miss Willetta Shepherd, the auditorium being filled with guests at the hour for the ceremony. The church was handsomely decorated with palms and with carnations and festoons of smilax. Before the arrival of the wedding party Miss Bess Nicholson sang a beautiful love song, being accompanied by Mr. Frank Reed. Miss Elisa Harmon presided at the piano and upon the entrance of the bridal party played the march from “Lohegrin.” The bride entered from the west door and proceeded to the altar attended by the ushers, Messrs. John Shepherd and Charles Spillman. The bride wore a most becoming costume of white Swiss organdie, trimmed in valenciennes lace and white satin ribbons. It was made entraine. She wore the bridal veil and carried bride’s roses. The groom came from the west door with ushers Robert and Ned Courtney. The officiating clergyman was Rev. H. L. Davis who performed the ceremony in a most happy manner, the full service of the M. E. church being used. During the ceremony the march from Lohengrin was softly continued, and upon the benediction being pronounced the Mendelssohn march was played, the wedding party leaving the church to this. After the wedding an informal reception was tendered the friends of the happy couple at the home of the bride's father, Thomas Shepherd, on west Main street. The decorations in the dining room were in red, while from the chandelier was suspended to the four corners of the table, white satin ribbon. Misses Mary Courtney and Harriet Hauser presided at the table and Misses Agnes Chamberlain and Grace Bishop served. The bride was the recipient of many elegant presents. At midnight Mr. and Mrs. Engle left for a visit in Chicago and upon their return will be at home to their friends in Englewood. Both young people are very popular with a very large circle of friends and all unite in wishing them the best the world holds. The out of town guests were Mr. and Mrs. W. W. Washburn, Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Kerr, and Mr. and Mrs. Edwin Kirkpatrick, of New Richmond.    --- transcribed by  kbz
