The following is Gen. McClellan’s letter to Col. Wallace, complimenting the conduct of his regiment.
Col. Lew Wallace – I congratulate you upon the gallant conduct of your regiment. Thank them for me, and express to the party how highly I honor their heroic courage, “worthy of their French namesakes.” I more than ever regret that you are not under my command. I have urged Gen. Scott to send up the Pennsylvania regiments. I begin to doubt whether the 11th Indiana needs reinforcements.” Gen GB McClellan
